Even though Arleen has been drawing most of her life, it has only been since 1991that she found her forte with the watercolor media. “I favor contrast the most. Itseems to make a painting sparkle when you achieve the right balance of warm andcool colors, “busy” versus “calm” segments, passages of light and shade, textured and plain areas....the possibilities are endless. And the watercolor media makes iteven more interesting and exciting because of the many different ways you canapply it, manipulate it, and mix it with other mediums.”

Much of Arleen’s early talent was self-taught; she did not take instruction until her late twenties when she enrolled in the Washington School of Art Home Study Course which introduced her to acrylic and oil painting. This whetted her appetite for more studies and she enrolled for several evening courses at Philadelphia College of Art while working during the day. Her art career was put on hold for 10-12 years to raise a family. Wanting to pursue her love of art, color, and design, Arleen was fortunate to find a wonderful teacher...Mellicent Allen of Moorestown...who specialized in “color theory”. Then she had the opportunity to study with Rosemary Hutchins of Cinnaminson, who was well known for her vibrant and “juicy” watercolor paintings and collages. Arleen has also attended workshops with well-known artists Jean Uhl Spicer, A.W.S.; Roberta CarterClark, A.W.S.; Robert Sakson, A.W.S.d.f., Tony Couch, Len Garon, Maxine Masterfield, A.W.S., Carl Dalio, A.W.S., N.W.S., Jane Lux, Doree Loschiavo, Steve Kuzma, Stephen Quiller, A.W.S., N.W.S., Steve Rogers, A.W.S., N.W.S., Caroline Mangan and Don Andrews, A.W.S. In addition to watercolor, she also likes to try her hand at pastels, sculpture and print making with local teachers.
